What an MRI actually does
MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to build detailed images of your soft tissue. Unlike a CT scan or an X-ray, it uses no ionizing radiation at all. That is true of every MRI, and it is the main reason imaging of this kind can be repeated over the years without building up a radiation dose. Most of the scans we offer are performed without contrast. Where a scan calls for one, we use a gadolinium-based agent given through a small IV in your arm, and we will always tell you in advance if yours needs it.
We offer a range of body scans rather than one fixed product. Which one you have depends on the question we are trying to answer, and that is decided together at your consultation. Some people come in for a broad look at their overall health, others for a focused view of a specific area of concern. Dr. Nguyen matches the scan to what you actually need before anything is booked.
An appointment usually lasts about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the scan. You lie still on a table that moves slowly through an open-ended scanner, so there is no fully enclosed tube to worry about. Most of our scans need no preparation and no injection. If yours does, we will tell you before you book, so there are no surprises on the day.
Your images are read by a board-certified radiologist, and your written report comes back to us within five business days. Dr. Nguyen then sits down with you in person to walk through what the scan shows, what it means for you, and what, if anything, is worth doing next.
What the scan is good at seeing
MRI is exceptional at soft tissue. These are the areas where it adds something no blood test, DEXA scan or biological age reading can.

Solid organ structure
Liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen and adrenal glands. MRI shows structural change, including fatty liver, which is common, consequential, and almost never picked up on a standard physical.

The brain and spine
MRI is the standard imaging tool for the central nervous system. It shows structural changes, disc degeneration, and vascular findings that nothing else in a longevity workup can see.

Musculoskeletal detail
Joints, discs, and soft tissue. Useful if you train seriously, and useful for explaining pain that has never had a clear answer.

Some cancers, sometimes early
MRI can detect certain solid tumors before symptoms appear. It will not catch everything, and we explain exactly what it can and cannot see before you book.
A scan is only as useful as the person reading it
Most of the people who come to us feel well and have no symptoms. They want a clear, detailed look at what is going on inside their body before anything shows up, and an MRI is one of the best ways to get it, with no radiation involved.
What makes the difference is what happens around the scan. Dr. Nguyen chooses the scan that fits what you want to know, and once the radiologist’s report is back, he sits down with you and puts every finding in the context of your history and the rest of your diagnostics.
What MRI will not do
Detect most cancers. Many early-stage tumors, and anything small enough to sit below the resolution of the scan, will not appear.
Tell you anything about your cholesterol, your insulin response, your hormones or your cardiovascular fitness. Those come from bloodwork and functional testing.
Replace age-appropriate screening. Mammography, colonoscopy and the rest still apply.
Come back clean and mean you are healthy. A normal scan is one input, not a verdict.
How we decide
We start with a consultation, not a scanner. Dr. Nguyen looks at your history, your family history, your symptoms if you have any, and your bloodwork, then decides which scan answers a real question for you. Sometimes that is a targeted study of one region, and sometimes a broader scan for an overall look at your health. Nothing is booked before that conversation.
A scan sold as a product hands you a report. A scan ordered by a physician who knows the rest of your picture gets read in context.

Before you come in
Most of our scans need no preparation at all. You will be asked to remove metal, so it is easiest to leave jewelry at home. If your scan does need anything of you beforehand, we will tell you when you book.

In the scanner
You lie on a padded table in loose clothing. The table moves slowly through the scanner, which is open at both ends. It is noisy, and you will be given headphones. The length of the scan depends on which one you are having, and the only thing asked of you is to stay still.

Afterwards
There is no radiation. Unless your scan used a contrast agent, there is nothing to recover from, and you can drive yourself home and go straight back to work.

Your results
Once your report is ready, you come back in to go through it with Dr. Nguyen. You will not be emailed a PDF and left to interpret it alone.
If you have a pacemaker, an implanted device, a cochlear implant, certain metal implants, or if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, tell us at your consultation. MRI is not appropriate for everyone and we will assess that before anything is booked.

Answers to your most asked questions
MRI uses no ionizing radiation, which is its main advantage over CT. Most of our scans use no contrast dye. If yours needs one, we will tell you before you book. It is not suitable for everyone, including people with certain implanted devices or metal implants, which is why we assess suitability at your consultation before anything is booked.
No. MRI can detect some solid tumors, sometimes before symptoms appear, and that is a genuine benefit for the right person. It will not detect blood cancers, many early-stage tumors, or anything below its resolution. A normal scan is reassuring, but it is not proof that nothing is wrong, and it does not replace age-appropriate screening such as mammography or colonoscopy.
No. MRI body scans are available a la carte after a consultation. Whatever you spend on a la carte testing is credited toward a membership if you join within 90 days.
Screening imaging for people without symptoms is generally not covered by insurance. HSA and FSA funds can often be used, and we will give you the documentation you need.

We look at your symptoms, your history, your family history and what the rest of your diagnostics already show, then recommend the scan that answers the actual question. Most incidental findings on any body scan turn out to be harmless. That is precisely why interpretation matters. Dr. Nguyen reviews any finding in the context of your history and the rest of your diagnostics, and tells you plainly whether it needs following up, watching, or nothing at all. If it does need further investigation, we coordinate that with you.
