Two tests quietly tell you more about your long-term health than almost anything else you can measure: a DEXA scan and a VO2 max test. Both are easy enough to find around San Jose and Los Gatos. What is harder to find is someone who will sit down and explain what your numbers mean together, and what to actually do with them.
This is a friendly look at what each test measures, what a good result looks like, and why the numbers are most useful when there is a plan behind them.
A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of X-ray to map your body composition with real precision: fat mass, lean muscle, and bone density, broken down region by region. Unlike a bathroom scale or a handheld body-fat device, it can show where your fat actually sits, including visceral fat, the metabolically active fat around your organs that drives most weight-related health risk. Two people can weigh exactly the same and carry very different risk. One is holding muscle and subcutaneous fat; the other is carrying visceral fat and slowly losing lean mass year over year. A scale cannot tell them apart. DEXA can.
VO2 max is the highest rate at which your body can take in and use oxygen during hard effort, and it is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health and longevity we have. It reflects how well your heart, lungs, blood, and muscles work together as a system. A low VO2 max is a larger statistical risk to your future than most of the numbers a standard physical tracks, which is much of why it is worth measuring properly. A direct test, performed on a bike or treadmill with a metabolic mask, is the gold standard. The estimates from watches and fitness apps are helpful for spotting your own trend, but they routinely miss by a meaningful margin.
VO2 max is measured in milliliters per kilogram per minute, and it naturally eases down with age, so results are read against age- and sex-adjusted ranges rather than a single cutoff. As a rough guide, a man in his 30s scoring in the high 40s to low 50s is in strong shape, with the comparable range for women sitting several points lower at each decade. These are general reference points, not hard lines, and your own result is always judged against validated ranges for your age and sex. The more useful question is where you sit within your bracket and which way you are heading. Moving from the middle of the pack toward the top quartile of your age group is one of the largest, most reachable reductions in long-term risk available to you.
You have two kinds of options in the South Bay. Several testing facilities around San Jose, Los Gatos, and the wider Bay Area offer affordable one-off DEXA and VO2 max tests. You leave with a report, interpretation is usually limited and often comes from a technician, and no medical plan follows. The other option is physician-led testing. At Lifetime Performance Medicine in Los Gatos, DEXA and direct VO2 max testing are built into our Optimization and Executive memberships, run alongside an 80+ biomarker panel, functional strength testing, and your biological age. The results feed your Lifetime Body Score, and Dr. Richard Nguyen, DO turns them into a 12-month plan. A scan can tell you where you are; it is less suited to telling you why, or what to do next. Visceral fat creeping up despite steady weight is really a metabolic question, and a VO2 max below your bracket is a training and cardiovascular one. Those answers tend to live in your bloodwork and clinical context rather than in the scan report itself.
For most adults actively working on body composition or fitness, DEXA every 6 to 12 months and VO2 max once a year is a sensible rhythm. Testing faster than that mostly measures noise. Our Optimization members have DEXA at baseline and month 12 with direct VO2 max testing, and Executive members add DEXA at several high-value checkpoints. Continuous wearable tracking fills the space between visits, following your HRV, sleep, and recovery so you can see whether the plan is working week to week.
Here is a pattern we see often. Someone gets a DEXA at a testing facility in San Jose, sees a visceral fat number they do not like, and launches into an aggressive program without a clear plan behind it. Six months later the weight is down, but so is lean mass, and the metabolic driver underneath was never actually tested. Measurement on its own is a good start. Pairing it with medical guidance is what turns numbers into a clear direction, and it is why we run DEXA, VO2 max, functional testing, and an 80+ marker blood panel together, so each number can help explain the others.
How much does a DEXA scan cost near San Jose?
Standalone scans are widely available across the South Bay at a range of price points. At Lifetime, DEXA is included within Optimization and Executive memberships rather than billed per scan.
Is a DEXA scan safe?
Yes. The radiation exposure is very low, a fraction of a standard chest X-ray, which is why repeat scanning through the year is perfectly reasonable.
Can I just use my smartwatch's VO2 max estimate?
For tracking your own trend over time, it is fine. For decisions worth making, a directly measured number is better, since watch estimates can be off by several points in either direction.
Do you offer DEXA or VO2 max testing without a membership?
Our testing is built into memberships because the value really lives in the interpretation and the plan. If you only want a scan, a testing facility is the more affordable choice, and we would be glad to be your next call when you want to understand what the numbers mean.
Where is your clinic located?
We are at 15965 Los Gatos Blvd #201 in Los Gatos, serving members from San Jose, Saratoga, Campbell, Cupertino, and across Santa Clara County, with all testing done on-site.
If you already have a scan report you do not fully understand, bring it along. If you have never been tested, it is a good time to start with the full picture. Book a consultation at our Los Gatos clinic.
Every membership begins with the same baseline panel and the same two visits: an intake with Morgan, then your Body Score reveal with me. If you have been guessing about your health for years, the first step is to stop guessing.

Dr. Nguyen has practiced in Los Gatos since 2007. He leads every membership: the Body Score reveal, the 90-day plan, and the annual review.
